Pacolet River Heritage Trust Preserve

Located near the confluence of the Pacolet River and the Lawson’s Fork, the 258 acre preserve protects two prehistoric soapstone outcrops that date back 3-5,000 years ago and provides habitat for uncommon plant species. Protected in 1993 by the Heritage Trust program and managed by several groups, including the Spartanburg Area Conservancy, the preserve is a great place to spend an afternoon hiking and enjoying nature.

Description:

From the kiosk, begin these occasionally steep, mostly-easy-to-follow, dirt trails that wind through mixed hardwood and pine upland forest and along the banks of the Pacolet River. You will traverse a quiet, 270-acre preserve that protects two ancient soap stone quarries, and provides habitat for uncommon plant species, as well as a variety of song birds, snakes, and other wildlife. Follow the chrome arrow markers to stay on the main out-and-back trail which ends at the old bridge abutment. You can extend your hike on the less-traveled, rolling, spur trail that branches off the main trail. This section loops back at the juncture of the Pacolet river and Richland Creek.

Insect repellant is recommended in warm weather. Pets are permitted on a leash.
